About the Company

Iron Galaxy is one of the world's largest independent video game developers, delivering both home-built, original experiences and partners' visions to all platforms.

Early history

In 2008 Dave Lang was working at Midway Games Chicago as its Studio Tech Director. After years of working at the Publisher, the ambiguity of Midway's financial situation led Dave to start Iron Galaxy. Originally envisioned as a tech consulting firm that would focus on helping Publishers and Developers meet their goals, Dave was the only employee for the first six months. After this period of testing the waters, Dave teamed up with several of his former teammates from Midway and the company grew into a modest, eight-person shop. In 2010, the company expanded its efforts into doing ports for publishers, with their first notable success being Street Fighter III 3rd Strike Online Edition for Capcom. This was the first project Iron Galaxy completed without another development partner.

After that

Iron Galaxy initially made its mark in the industry as a porting house. Then in 2011, Iron Galaxy set their sights on the company's first original game, Wreckateer, which was published in 2012. After Wreckateer, the company opened up a second studio in Orlando to assist with Divekick, and after Divekick the team got a chance to work on the largest original production yet for Iron Galaxy: Killer Instinct Seasons 2 and 3. Despite these successes, the team never forgot their roots, and they still do tech consulting and ports to this day; having worked on some of their partners' most established brands like Bioshock, Call of Duty, Destiny, Batman, Elder Scrolls and Diablo 3.

2D Artist for sprite-based strategy game, semi-vector style artwork

Rocket Jump Technology
Remote

Job Description

I'm a solo indie developer working on a game called King under the Mountain (http://kingunderthemounta.in/). It's a simulation-based strategy game, borrowing the visual style of Prison Architect and Rimworld (to be fair, Rimworld also copied the style from Prison Architect). I'm looking for a freelance artist to take on some commissions to contribute to the in-game artwork, specifically sprites to be used for characters, items, furniture, that kind of thing. Here's the latest trailer to give you a feel of where the game is up to:

{video:661794}

The graphics in King under the Mountain are pretty simple - the game is effectively top-down 2D though the visual style has a cartoony side-on and slightly above perspective for most of the assets. Rather than a pixel art style, it is more of a flash/vector-based style (it's up to you if you'd prefer to work in a raster or vector graphics format). The in-game map is a grid of tiles which are stored as 64x64 pixel images, and the characters and items in the game are also stored and rendered at this resolution, scaled up or down depending on how the camera is zoomed in or out.

{image:661795}

Sprites in the game are made up of one or more layers. Most of these layers are stored in greyscale (or something close to it) so that they can be multiplied by a different colour by the game engine to represent different colours for skin, hair, wood and so on. Other layers/images are stored in true colour as they're not re-coloured by the game engine, such as clothing in the following example of how the different layers are combined together (note that the eyes and eyebrows are at very much the wrong scale):

The other thing of note are the different orientations (or directions) that characters and items in the game can face towards. Rather than the simple up/down/left/right 4 orthogonal directions, the game uses up/up-right/down-right/down/down-left/up-left for 6 different orientations as this seemed to work best with the art style.

{image:661796}

At least some of the assets used in different orientations are an X or Y-flipped copy of the original, so most of the left-facing assets are usually the same asset as the right-facing ones flipped along the X axis by the game engine. Sometimes the down-right orientation is used as the up-left asset, and vice-versa, as in these wooden planks which are shown when carried by a character (so there are only 2 unique images stored and used):

{image:661797}

It's worth knowing that King under the Mountain generates bump-mapped "normals" of the sprites to use for directional lighting in the game engine. These are mostly auto-generated by tools and not something you need to worry about as an artist.

{image:661798}

Finally, while the sprites are stored in the game as separate images (one image file for each layer for each sprite) as PNGs, they are combined by the game engine into a spritesheet automatically.

{image:661800}

That's most of what you need to know when creating assets for King under the Mountain. When delivering assets for use, it's best to supply them as 64x64 pixel (or larger where necessary) PNGs rather than trimming the image to just the non-transparent section as this should also be handled by the game engine (it's currently done by hand), so that the developer(s) can tell how they're supposed to stack on top of each other (as in, where they are positioned relative to each other). Additionally, you might prefer to work in a higher resolution (such as using a "tile size" of 128x128 pixels), and if so it is nice to have the assets delivered in this scale as well as the final 64x64 px scale in case the team or a user wants to support a high resolution mod.

With all that out of the way - we're looking for a freelance 2D artist to take on packages of work which will usually involve a group of related assets/sprites, which might need drawing in several orientations as described, and might additionally be made up of several layers each. In particular, we're looking for an artist comfortable with creating tileable sprites (for walls and floors) to be able to tackle an advanced form of tiling for walls in the game as described at http://kingunderthemounta.in/walls-how-do-they-work/

If you think you could handle creating some wall sprites as described in the linked post, you should be able to handle anything at all required in King under the Mountain. The initial commission will be for a set of 5 wall sprites as described, and if that goes well, there are many other sets of assets that need creating for the game.

Skills & Requirements

All work will be done and managed remotely.

We're looking for someone who:

  • Can produce 2D sprites in the same style as those already in-use in the game (examples above)
  • Is comfortable with making tileable (AKA seamless) images to be used as textures for ground tiles/wall tiles

The ideal applicant will enjoy or be familiar with similar games in the genre: Dwarf Fortess, Prison Architect, Rimworld.

Use whatever tools you like, the ideal final deliverable will be a set of .PNG files, one for each separately-colourable layer of the asset (this will be a single layer in several cases).

Additional Information

Working remotely is an option

How to Apply

Email ross.turner001@googlemail.com with a link to your portfolio, and either your hourly rate or a quote for producing 5 64x64px wall sprites as detailed at http://kingunderthemounta.in/walls-how-do-they-work/

Further reference images and existing assets will be provided, and/or feel free to contact me with any questions!

About the Company

Rocket Jump Technology is a small indie studio based in Manchester, UK. Initially founded as an enterprise web development consultancy, the studio is in the process of developing their first game - King under the Mountain - a simulation-based settlement-building strategy/management game set in a fantasy world.
